Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – A CASE REPORT

Role of Siddha in Management of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to Reinforce the Quality of Life - A Pediatric Case Report

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic condition that causes gradual muscle weakness, walking difficulties, frequent falls, and later may affect breathing. Here, we present a case of 10-year-old boy with DMD with trouble walking long distances, needing support to climb stairs, frequent falls, muscle spasms, weakness in both legs, and difficulty in balancing. His blood test showed very high CPK levels (9021 U/L), which confirmed severe muscle damage and is a confirmative test for DMD. He was given Siddha therapy for three months, which included gentle stimulation of energy points (Varmam), therapeutic pressure massages (Thokkanam), physiotherapy, simple yoga practices, and a diet designed to improve stamina and muscle strength. Family support and counselling were also provided.

After 45 sessions of treatment, his CPK levels came down to 5200 U/L, and his strength improved. He was able to walk more than one kilometre at a faster pace, stand without support for 15 minutes, and had better strength in both hands and legs. His range of movements improved, no frequent falls and strength in lower limbs is seen better. Though DMD has no permanent cure, this case shows that Siddha therapy along with physiotherapy, diet, yoga, and proper care can slow the disease, improve strength, and enhance quality of life. The child gained more stamina, independence, and confidence in daily life through this approach.
