Lumbar Spondylolisthesis – A CASE REPORT

Management of Lumbar Degenerative Spondylolisthesis by Siddha Marma (Energy) and Thokkanam Therapy: A Case Report

Lumbar Degenerative Spondylolisthesis (LDS) is a back condition where one bone in the spine slips forward over the one below it. This can cause severe lower back pain, stiffness, difficulty walking or bending, pain travelling to the legs, numbness, tingling, and reduced movement in the hip and pelvic region. In Siddha medicine, this condition is described as Vathasthambam, where the symptoms are very similar.

A 65-year-old woman with constant back pain and radiating pain in her left leg She complained of continuous pain in left leg while sitting and walking, was unable to stand for even 15 minutes, pain was disturbing her sleep and she was advised urgent surgery by her Neurosurgeon. She was treated with Siddha Marma (energy therapy) and Thokkanam (manual therapy with hand pressure) for 23 days with a restricted diet to loose weight. These therapies worked by stimulating energy points, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and correcting posture.

After the therapy, she experienced a remarkable reduction in back and leg pain, improved spine alignment, better movement of her pelvis, and the ability to walk and do daily activities without discomfort. Even after 3 months of follow-up, she remained pain-free, active, and her overall quality of life improved significantly without the need for medicines or surgery.
