DMD (Dusheene Muscular Dystrophy)

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. It primarily affects boys and is caused by the absence of dystrophin, a protein essential for muscle strength and function.
Common Symptoms of DMD
- Delayed walking or difficulty standing up
- Frequent falls and trouble running or jumping
- Enlarged calf muscles (pseudohypertrophy)
- Muscle stiffness and joint contractures
- Progressive muscle weakness, starting from legs and pelvis
- Respiratory and cardiac complications in advanced stages
Chakrasiddh Approach to DMD
In Siddha medicine, Duchenne muscular dystrophy is related to an imbalance in the Vatha humor, which governs movement and neuromuscular function. Siddha therapy is a complementary therapy in curing DMD by slowing down progression, preserving mobility, and enhancing overall strength and comfort.
Siddha Treatment Modalities:
1. External Therapies:- Thokkanam (Siddha therapeutic massage) with oils
- Improves blood flow, reduces muscle tightness, and delays atrophy
2. Varmam Therapy:
- Gentle stimulation of energy points to enhance neuromuscular coordination
3. Rejuvenation Therapy (Kayakarpam):
- Use of specific Siddha formulations and dietary regimens to delay degeneration and improve vitality
4. Diet and Lifestyle:
- Easily digestible, nutritious food
- Avoidance of foods like excessive dry/cold items
- Aims to nourish muscles, support nerves, reduce degeneration
5. Yoga and Breathing Exercises:
- Mild stretching and breathing techniques to maintain flexibility and lung function
Post Improvements with Siddha Therapy
- Reduced muscle stiffness and improved joint mobility
- Better control over muscle spasms and fatigue
- Improved quality of sleep and general wellbeing
- Delay in progression of symptoms in some cases
- Supportive to respiratory and cardiac health when used along with modern care
Note: Since DMD is a genetic condition, Siddha therapy acts as supportive care and should be combined with allopathic monitoring (physiotherapy, cardiology, respiratory care).
